Making a mark

A kindergarten teacher was suspended this month for writing "Where are my glasses?" with a blue water-based marker on the face of a five-year-old student. Phyllis Adelsflugel used "extremely poor judgment", said her boss, Chip Zullinger, South Carolina school district superintendent .

The family of the girl, who is black, said the incident was racial. Her mother, Teresa Campbell, said she plans to sue Ms Adelsflugel, who is white. Ms Adelsflugel, a first-year teacher, has been suspended with pay while an investigation is conducted.

In other cases, she acknowledged, she used face paint to send messages to parents on their children's faces. "These notes are not meant to be embarrassing to the child in any way," Ms Adelsflugel said in a statement.
