Pupils may be fined for having long hair or dirty uniform or shoes despite parents’ complaints. Deputy education minister Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn recently confirmed school principals’ right to fine disobedient, disruptive and truant pupils. He has taken a strong stand against indiscipline in schools and has urged school heads to be tough on pupils who get involved in fights or bullying.

However, some parents are believed to have filed complaints against the fines system, arguing that it is punishing the parents rather than their children.
