Mandatory languages are a mistake

It is unbelievable that the government-commissioned review led by Lord Dearing recommends that all children should have to learn a foreign language from the age of seven.

It is amazing that education research constantly ignores the fact that the curriculum needs to match the interests of pupils rather than those of the Government or the researchers.

As an inspector, I have observed pupil boredom, misbehaviour and disengagement in modern foreign language lessons, despite good teaching.
