FRANCE: Teachers’ unions have reacted with dismay to the conviction for manslaughter of a primary teacher, one of whose pupils fell to her death from a classroom window, during a Christmas party in 1996.

Sarah Brunelle, aged 10, had used a chair to climb on to the sill while teacher Philippe Boubet, who had opened the window earlier, was busy elsewhere in the classroom. A court gave Boubet a five-month suspended prison sentence and ordered him to pay Sarah’s family E120,000 (pound;84,000).
