Marie Lohan began her teaching career in Belfast 45 years ago. Now she’s retiring from St Mary and St John Catholic primary school in Erdington, Birmingham - for the second time

Marie joined the school as a class teacher 26 years ago and has also been the English co-ordinator, acting deputy head and special needs teacher. Recently, to celebrate 25 years in the current building, she helped trace the names of many ex-pupils for a jubilee photo display. When she retired as a teacher five years ago she promptly returned as a classroom assistant with special responsibility for literacy. “Her great love and expertise is English,” says headteacher Michael Nielsen, “and we were delighted to get her back.” A letter from the staffroom nominating Marie for our flowers, champagne and chocolates says she’s a devoted colleague who’ll be much missed. Aged 67, she’s retiring for good.
