More than 100 schools, colleges and institutes of further and higher education have applied for a 1995 Charter Mark, the public-sector award for excellence.

So far just 23 schools and FHE colleges have been given Charter Marks in the three years since the scheme was launched. Any service which deals with the public can apply for a Charter Mark. The scheme has been hampered in the past by a lack of interest.
