Meanwhile, is the Diary alone in worrying about Mr Clarke’s martial tone when he expressed his wish to “take out” poorly performing heads?

The last time the Diary came across the term “take out” it was something to do with Indian restaurants, courtship or a military term with violent connotations - much in favour among the Americans in Iraq at the moment.

So will Mr Clarke be using “surgical strikes” and minimising “collateral damage” in his education policy? Or is he just yearning to be one of the boys in the War Cabinet? Alternatively, should heads of failing schools expect to be invited out for candle-lit suppers?
