Mary Compton leads protest

* NUT vice-president Mary Compton led a protest this week on the steps of the Welsh Assembly about cutbacks.

A coach-load of teachers from John Beddoes secondary school in Presteigne, Powys, demonstrated outside an education committee meeting.

Powys County Council is cutting funding to its schools by pound;628,000, a 1 per cent drop.

Ms Compton, head of modern languages at John Beddoes, said the school's budget was being cut by more than pound;20,000, forcing it to make one teacher redundant and stopping it replacing another member of staff.

Powys County Council was not yet certain how much of the pound;18.7m grant it would receive, but said it was possible the sum could reverse the school cuts and stop redundancies.
