Numbers. Patterns. Measures. Big Books. By Peter Patilla. Heinemann pound;17.99 each.

These books attempt to adapt a literacy Big Book format to maths, with particular emphasis on promoting key vocabulary (each has a page of notes by Stefanie Sullivan on using the book in numeracy strategy lessons).

They ar full of attractive photographs and drawings, although some children may find 30 or more words on a page daunting. Numbers, the most successful of the series, includes games for children to play. Much of Patterns may be suitable for many children at the lower end of juniors, as well as infant pupils.
