Matthew MacIver, the former heidie who now heads the General Teaching Council for Scotland, had a busy day the other week. First, he had to deliver some well-chosen words on initial teacher education at a conference organised by the council.

Afterwards, he had to slip away to pick up Baroness Warnock from Waverley Station in Edinburgh, prior to her delivering the GTC’s annual lecture that same evening - and then treat her to afternoon tea.

Lewisman MacIver quipped: “You will, of course, understand that boys from the croft like myself are well used to having afternoon tea with baronesses.”
