More students applied for university places on media studies courses than mathematics and science subjects, according to the Universities and Colleges Admission Service.

This year’s crop of applications, for places in higher education this autumn, shows an increase of 54 per cent on last year for media studies, with a total of 32,862 students trying to get onto media courses. This compares to 26, 416 applications for maths, 21,442 for physics and 30,290 for chemistry.

The growth in popularity of media studies has meant that demand has outstripped supply, and media courses have become among the most heavily over-subscribed subjects.
