A memorial to celebrate the life of Ann Maguire, the teacher stabbed to death at a school in Leeds, is to be held next Monday at the city’s town hall.

The memorial service has been planned by Leeds City Council in conjunction with Mrs Maguire’s family, and will be open to the public, providing an opportunity to honour her memory.

Mrs Maguire, who taught at Corpus Christi Catholic College for more than 40 years, was regarded by her students as a “mother figure”.

Family and friends, former colleagues and students will attend the service, along with local dignitaries and representatives from schools across the city.

The 61-year-old teacher’s memory was honoured at the TES School Awards in July, which recognised her contribution to teaching with a special award for Services to Education.    

Mrs Maguire was killed in front of her students in April. She was due to retire at the end of the summer term.

The teenage suspect has accepted responsibility for her unlawful killing. A trial on the murder charge is expected to take place in November.
