Two Durham colleges called off merger talks a week after announcing plans to link up.
Negotiations between East Durham Community College and nearby New College Durham broke down after just three weeks, Ian Prescott, East Durham principal, said.
Mr Prescott announced new merger talks with another north-east college, Houghall College.
