The Met Office has come a long way since it was formed in 1854 to provide information on weather and sea currents to mariners. Today it looks beyond the weather to its impact on the environment and is expanding into areas of environmental science such as hydrology and oceanography.
Its online weather resources for schools include charts, world weather observations, a curriculum learning centre with activities for primary and secondary schools and an archive of historical weather events.
The site also has a teacher training centre, with coverage of subjects such as the UK climate and air masses.
It offers a bibliography and suggests essay questions and is considering one-day teacher training courses at its Exeter headquarters.
