* The original goal of Microsoft was to have its software running on computers that were in every home on every desk. Having just about achieved that, it now wants Windows software in as many mobile phones as possible.

Microsoft says its Windows Mobile software combines the familiarity of the desktop computer with the convenience and accessibility of a mobile phone.

Handsets running Windows Mobile can use email, access the internet, conduct MSN instant messaging and transfer data between their phone and a PC. The latest model to use Windows Mobile is the Motorola MPx200, which is available for the Orange network.
