THE pattern for the first century of the new millennium should already be being set in schools, the annual conference sponsored by Edinburgh Council and The TES Scotland will be told next month.
Ted Wragg, a leading educational controversialist south of the border and professor at Exeter University, will argue that the likely future balance between work, family life and leisure pursuits should be reflected now in the preparation of young people.
“I follow the futurologist Alvin Toffler when he claimed that ‘all education is a vision of the future’,” Professor Wragg says. Adaptability, team work and personal skills will all be at a premium, and boys, whose jobs in the past depended on manual skills and strength, face a particular challenge.
Another keynote speaker at the conference on November 5 will be Sam Galbraith, Minister for Children and Education, and workshops will look at detailed aspects of the conference theme of “raising attainment in the new millennium”.
