All schools are to receive a package of the highly acclaimed Heriot-Watt materials for a limited range of Advanced Higher courses following pressure from the Scottish Executive, it was announced this week.

The text version of the five pilot Advanced Higher courses will be sent to secondaries through the Executive-backed OFDL (Open, Flexible and Distance Learning in National Qualifications) project, run by Learning and Teaching Scotland.

The two initiatives have established close links to ensure more schools have greater access to the new approaches and materials.

Gordon Craigie, OFDL development officer, said interactive, web-enabled material would lso be available this summer to support the four core skill areas of communication, IT, numeracy and problem-solving at Intermediate 2 and Higher.

Meanwhile, the Scholar programme continues to expand its range of courses. This summer, for the first time, Highers will be available online in biology, chemistry, computing, engineering, maths and physics. Modern languages and management and information studies are due for the same treatment.

The package includes online texts with activities and examples, automatically marked assessments, simulations, animations to bring diagrams to life, interactive tutorial exercises and online discussion groups.
