THE man who rescued the Rover Group will chair one of the new local learning and skills councils, writes Steve Hook.
John Towers, 52, led the successful bid by the Phoenix consortium to buy Rover from BMW. The former chief executive of Rover, who is now its non-executive chairman, will chair the Birmingham and Solihull council.
He said the role followed on naturally from his role as chairman of the Bimingham and Solihull Training and Enterprise Council.
He added that Rover would continue to do what it could to boost local skills. He said: “I wouldn’t say Rover is in a position to sponsor training outside its own sector, we are not in a position to be that benevolent, but we will continue to play a strong role in our own sector.”
