It is not just basic skills students and, apparently, some of their lecturers, who have problems with literacy (see FE Focus, 3). The literacy gremlins also thrive in the marketing operations of colleges.

Newham College of Further Education, in east London, was keen to acknowledge its partners when its Centre of Vocational Excellence was being launched in the presence of Alan Johnson, the lifelong learning minister.

So a banner was displayed, explaining the COVE is being launched “in associaton” (sic) with its partners, including the railway companies Eurostar and First Great Eastern.
