The British Museum’s new exhibition Renaissance to Goya: prints and drawings from Spain gives students a peek at Spanish life from the mid-16th to the 19th century.

What is it?

Works by Spanish artists and other Europeans working in Spain will be on display at the London museum, celebrating the underappreciated art of the country.

Unlike many European countries, little has been written about Spanish art, in part because people mistakenly believed that Spanish artists did not draw. The exhibition explores the reasons for this while displaying evidence of Spanish art’s vibrant and distinctive character.

Highlight are Francisco de Goya’s etchings - from those documenting famous bullfights to his darker Disasters of War series, which portrays his reaction to Napoleon’s invasion of Spain and its aftermath. Engravings by Flemish printmaker Pedro Perret and art created by Jusepe de Ribera in Spanish Naples are just some of the other works the exhibition has to offer.

How to see it?

The free exhibition runs from 20 September to 6 July 2013.
