Real Venice - pictures of a sinking city

International photographers and artists have picked up their cameras to create an extraordinary exhibition on Venice, to be shown in London next month.

The collection of images of this ancient city form part of an initiative to raise funds for Venice in Peril’s ongoing campaign to save the sinking city.

Among the 14 artists and photographers taking part are Lynne Cohen, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Antonio Girbes, Candida Hofer, Robert Walker and Hiroshi Watanabe.

Each took a series of photographs of the city during a visit. A book will be published by Ivorypress to coincide with the exhibition. Elena Foster of Ivorypress has curated the show, called Real Venice.

The collection was originally shown in the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore last May, but moves to Phillips de Pury in London for just two weeks in November. During the exhibition an auction of selected works will be held by Simon de Pury.

The Venice in Peril fund was set up after the flood in 1966 when the city’s waters rose nearly two metres above mean water level.

The controversial fund - some argue Venice should be left to sink softly - is committed to ensuring the sustainability of the city.
