I was surprised to read that one head who attended the National College for School Leadership’s Seizing Success conference had taken the National Professional Qualification for Headship, but drawn nothing from it because it was “just jargon”.

I am a headteacher and have completed the NPQH. It has been a source of huge insight into the management of my school and helped to develop a vision of how I want to lead it.

Professional development brings responsibilities. We need to make the most of opportunities to learn, to be accountable for what we invest in CPD, squeeze the most from it and pass on the benefits to our school community.

We expect pupils to be active learners and we need to have the same attitude ourselves, rather than bemoaning our fate when faced with new challenges.
