A newly qualified science teacher who failed to motivate pupils has been granted a second extension to his induction period. Shem Obuya, a trainee at George Green's comprehensive in east London, became depressed in November 2004 following problems with lesson planning and behaviour control. He was given a month off work. In March 2005, concerns were raised about his ability to motivate pupils. In July, his induction period was extended until October 28. He failed. The General Teaching Council for England has now ruled that the school failed to extend the induction period sufficiently, and granted him a second extension.
