More than one answer to dyslexia

THE feature on dyslexia contained many key points (TES, Friday magazine, February 28).

There is a continuing need for informed awareness of how dyslexic children learn, but equally important is the understanding of the underlying causes of their learning difficulties.

As a specialist teacher, I teach dyslexics literacy, maths, study skills and memory strategies, but I am unable to assist in alleviating the symptoms that act as barriers to learning.

Before dyslexics can learn from me, they may need appropriate therapy to enable them to become more effective learners.

That is why we should take seriously the work carried out by educational kinesiologists, neuro-developmental delay therapists, Ravis Technique practitioners and at DDAT centres.

Because of the complexity of the phenomena with which we are dealing, we all need to pool our ideas and expertise. Furthermore, we should recognise that there are lots of desirable elements in being dyslexic.
