NOT so the other key appointment in education, director of the National Literacy Strategy. John Stannard, the current incumbent, retires at the end of the year. He is a hard act to follow, but there are strong candidates from within his team.

As well as Laura Huxford, the director of training, thee is deputy Stephen Anwell and Su Hackman, who is in charge of the expansion of the empire into the lower secondary years where results leave a lot to be desired.

There could also be competition from outside, particularly from senior inspectors in the Office for Standards in Education.
