Governors of Westminster Kingsway college are considering closing their adult and further education campus in Battersea, which provides courses for 440 full-time-equivalent students.

Martin Linton, MP for Battersea, has met Richard Williams, the college’s principal, and Jill Lowry, operations director of Central London Learning and Skills Council, to insist that the centre should stay open.

He said: “I cannot believe that they would be justified in closing this building at a time when we are seeing the biggest expansion in further education for 50 years. “It is absolutely vital that Battersea continues to have a further education college and an adult education centre.”

Governors discussed the issue yesterday but the college said a final decision about the site’s future could be months away. A spokesman for the college said: “Closure of the site is just one of the options. This is partly a question of making the best use of resources and partly a question of making sure we can give the best service from the seven sites.”
