An elaborately carved 13th-century stone coffin forms the centrepiece of the recently refurbished North Ayrshire Museum in Saltcoats.

The former parish church, which features displays on transport and popular culture as well as archaeology, was closed for several months during the extensive make-over. Schools visiting the local history museum will now have the use of a new resources room, says curator Mark Strachan.
