Opportunities like this don’t come along every day - a chance for students to upload video and audio of their music performances, share them with other young people, then leave their comments and vote on their favourites, as well as receive input from online resources. Welcome to the Next BRIT Thing.

After uploading music in classical or popular style or entering their compositions in a songwriting category, learning can continue outside lessons as students listen and vote via an iPhone app. Using this type of technology is a great vehicle to encourage students’ music-making and bring their informal skills and knowledge into the classroom.

Support from the Department for Education, BPI and Radiowaves, as well as some pretty impressive prizes, make all this digital uploading worth the effort. Great music-making could lead to performing at a regional heat, before a national final at the O2 arena, a recording session at the Beatles’ old stamping ground Abbey Road studios, tickets to the Brit Awards themselves and thousands of pounds of musical equipment for students and schools.

Even if the road doesn’t quite end there, the journey is one your students will be glad to have made. Music-making and technology is a great partnership and adds a fresh dimension to dynamic teaching and learning. www.nextbritthing.com
