An East Lothian independent school is taking delivery of 300,000- worth of the world’s most sought-after pianos.

Loretto School has signed a deal with Steinway amp; Sons to provide 13 of the famous pianos, favoured by many of the world’s top concert pianists, in various parts of the school. Headteacher Peter Hogan said: “The best equipment inspires and allows for the highest possible standards in all aspects of education. We’re thrilled that every boy and girl will have access to this Rolls-Royce of musical instruments at all times - in lessons, recitals, examinations and just for the fun of making music.”

The school’s music director, Edward Coleman, said the partnership with Steinway guaranteed piano provision at Loretto for at least the next 10 years. “With the help of Steinway, our pianists will have the best start to their musical education any child could have,” he said.

The pianos are part of Loretto’s aim to create a “centre of excellence” in the expressive arts. The vast majority of pupils already take individual music lessons, and the school puts on more than 50 music and drama performances each year. They will be housed in the senior and junior school music departments, as well as Loretto Chapel and the music department’s concert hall.
