Walter Humes of this parish caused a small upheaval in the small but perfectly formed world of education faculties when he deserted his parish of Strathclyde University and moved to another at Aberdeen University.

Such is Humes’s worth that it took two to replace him - Stephen Baron from Glasgow University and Brian Boyd, a Strathclyde colleague and another of this parish, who was elevated to a professorship while he was at it. The Glasgow vacancy was filled by a man from Paisley, Ian Menter.

That, of course, leaves a vacancy at Paisley which has not yet been filled.

Now there’s this chap in Aberdeen called Humes . . .
