PSHE

Ages 7-11

Once a week we complete a short 10-minute grammar for writing session. To help encourage the children’s emotional development we use resources tied to the social and emotional aspects of learning (Seal) programme.

Looking at photos from Seal resources, pupils have to describe or explain how a person might be feeling by using adjectives, adverbs and wow words (words you don’t hear often).

Alternatively, we use an emotion word, for example happy, anxious, concerned or embarrassed as a focus word. The children must always speak in a full sentence (as they say their sentence before they write it). This has been successful and sneaks in an extra 10 minutes of PSHE into another subject area, which is not a bad thing.

Julie Cornish is a PSHE specialist in London.
