* The national debate was after all no yawn, according to ministers as they announced that 1,200 separate responses had poured in to the Scottish Executive before the closing date on July 12. More than 15,000 people were involved in events around the debate.

Nicol Stephen, Deputy Education Minister, said: “This is a very big response and it shows how strongly people feel about the future of Scotland’s schools. It has been great to see so many young people getting involved and telling us - sometimes very bluntly - how to improve their schools”.

Ministers have commissioned researchers from Edinburgh University to produce an independent analysis of the submissions. They will also consult with the Scottish Parliament’s education, culture and sport committee over its inquiry into the purposes of education.
