There will be no dedicated building or team of actors; instead, a creative director will be appointed to commission work from Scottish playwrights, choose appropriate Scottish directors and actors and tour work across Scotland and beyond. He or she will be supported by a small administrative team, which will create a flexible and collaborative way of bringing together the variety of talent available across the theatre sector.

“The National Theatre of Scotland will provide works for children and young people and provide stimulation and inspiration for people at all stages of their lives,” says James Boyle, chairman of the Scottish Arts Council.

The productions will also offer education programmes to enhance people’s enjoyment and appreciation of theatre, especially children’s.

The details of how the National Theatre of Scotland will work with teachers and children will be decided by the creative director, the chair and the board of directors. The chair is expected to be announced by Christmas and the board should be in place by the spring.
