This week: Gangnam Style school parodies

There was a time when South Korea was best known for its high-quality technology goods made by the likes of Samsung and LG and its competitively priced cars made by Hyundai and Kia.

But of late, the booming Asian country has become known for a far more irritating but no less pervasive export called Psy - a portly, tuxedo-wearing pop star who shot to No 1 in the UK charts over the summer.

Unless you have been living in the country’s unhappy neighbour to the north, you’ll know the song is called Gangnam Style and features said pop star doing a dance where he pretends to ride a horse. Really, that’s all it takes to top the charts.

TES has no problem with annoyingly catchy one-hit wonders invading these shores, but the video has spawned a multitude of parodies being posted on YouTube, particularly by schools.

It was, at best, mildly amusing when the posh kids from Eton did it. But when teachers start swinging imaginary lassos over their heads you know things are getting out of hand. So let Tadcaster Grammar School’s version of the song, Tadgram Style, be the last. And yes, we know it was for Children in Need, so well done for that.

Nevertheless, for crimes against music and dancing, Gangnam Style school parodies must trot over to the naughty step.
