Our inland waterways system displays a fine variety of engineering ingenuity, offering many sites of interest to industrial archaeologists and providing a beautiful range of settings for wildlife. Many children, however, have little idea of when, why and how canals were built and what navigable waterways were used for. The Wild Over Waterways education initiative provides much relevant information, and its new website makes available free interactive classroom materials. Children can fit together a lock gate, create a paper frog or steer a narrow boat while keeping safe and dry. www.wow4water.net
