A primary in Neath Port Talbot has won a special award after encouraging more than two- thirds of its pupils to cycle to school regularly.

Bryn Primary is the first in Wales to receive a School Mark Award from the sustainable transport charity Sustrans for its dedication to transforming the school run.

Pupils take part in a weekly cycle session on Friday afternoons and various bike-related events are held throughout the year, including bike breakfasts, skills lessons, guided rides, mechanics classes and puncture repair sessions.

The school has also benefited from safer road crossings, new pathways, secure cycle storage and improved road markings as a result of the Assembly government’s Safe Routes in Communities initiative.

Jane Lorimer, deputy director of Sustrans, which works with 47 schools across Wales, said: “The children, parents and teachers have shown a real dedication to using two wheels instead of four on the school run.

“The school has really embraced a culture of cycling and I’m sure it will continue with even more events and activities to inspire children to take to two wheels.” DE.
