I was disappointed to see the changes to AS and A2 mathematics reported in such a negative manner on the front page of The TES, August 8.

As a teacher I am pleased maths can now compete with other subjects on a level playing field and the system for selecting optional units is simple and flexible. We will have time to deliver the material and the students will have time to practise the techniques and achieve a good understanding.

As a principal examiner I am relieved that these changes should enable us to maintain the standard of AS and A2 mathematics.

The usual critics of A-level maths should be pleased too, since there has been no reduction in core content but the proportion of harder pure maths has increased from 50 to 67 per cent.
