The Mini Netball week, aimed at P5-7 pupils, was launched on Monday at Glasgow’s George Square with hundreds of children taking part. Entry is free and participants receive a certificate of attendance. Events have been held through the week from Orkney and Shetland to the Borders.
It is the first time Netball Scotland has attempted something on a grand scale. Take-up depends on the enthusiasm of local organisers and willingness of primary schools to get involved. The governing body is keen to get more schoolchildren involved and has enlisted the help of schools sport co-ordinators and teachers to help. “The aims of the festival week are mass participation and lots of fun,” says Shazia Malik, youth development officer. “We want to create a greater awareness of the mini-game, which has been adapted to suit the younger player.”
