Never let the facts cloud the issue

Each time that Fred Forrester writes about the iniquities of Catholic schools in Scotland, I am always interested in the evidence base for his allegations.

On the latest occasion in last week’s (Letters) TES Scotland, he alleges that Catholic schools are in terminal decline. Moreover, he claims, Catholic secondary schools are only distinctive in about 5 per cent of their provision.

Where does Fred find the evidence to substantiate such wild allegations? What statistical evidence does he cite? Which HMI reports have informed his views? Which Catholic schools does he visit to find such a paucity of distinctive provision?

No doubt the thousands of teachers who contribute so significantly to the success of Catholic schools throughout Scotland will be reassured to know that Fred always checks his facts before expressing his opinions with such vehemence.
