Never say die;Jotter

It's good to see enterprise from Fife Enterprise which has been whipping up local interest in its new strategy to help dynamic, young entrepreneurs develop a "high-growth business".

Among those promised advice and support from banks and "business angels" was one JDobie of Balado, Kinross-shire. Dynamic and entrepreneurial he may be, but the best friends of Edinburgh's retired director of education would not describe him as young.

Nor, having handed over a pound;185 million business in good nick, does he seem to need advice from venture capitalists and business angels.

Dobie tells us that, while he is pleased that reaching 65 is no barrier to a free service, he wonders whether indiscriminate mailshots are the best use of public funds.

Perhaps Fife Enterprise needs to indulge in the sort of target-

setting with which directors of education are all too familiar.
