To create a fairer admissions system, underpinning government aims to create a school system shaped by parents. It will require fair admission arrangements which do not disadvantage one child over another.

When does it kick in?Consultation on the draft code ends on December 1.

Given parliamentary approval, it will take effect from February 2007 and affect admissions from 2008.

Is it compulsory?

Yes - most of the requirements set out in the code are mandatory, although some are guidelines.
