* A new immersion scheme has been set up in Wales to enable English-speaking primary pupils to transfer to Welsh-medium secondaries.
The scheme, which will be piloted from May, will allow pupils with little or no knowledge of the Welsh language to acquire sufficient fluency to continue on to a Welsh-medium secondary. It is aimed at pupils from Year 3 upwards.
At the moment, only those pupils who enter Welsh-medium education at the ages of three or five are able to progress through the system.
Jane Davidson, Welsh Assembly minister for education and lifelong learning, said: “We are working to make bilingualism a reality in Wales.”
