The new Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council will strike a “renewed partnership” with colleges and universities, its chief executive pledged.

Roger McClure, the council’s chief executive, said it would be “less prescriptive” in its financial dealings with the sectors, and it would give more responsibility to institutions for their own performance as opposed to the compliance of the past.

It would be “a more mature relationship,” Mr McClure said, but he went on to warn that the funding council would expect more in terms of institutions’ accountability. “If we have to intervene, we will do so more decisively and in a way that has greater impact,” he said.
