A new programme

The English as an Additional Language pilot aims to increase the confidence and expertise of mainstream primary teachers in meeting the needs of advanced bilingual learners. It provides funding to appoint one EAL consultant in each local education authority, to work across 10 schools.

The programme involves 21 LEAs; an additional 40 LEAs have said they are interested in participating as associates. The pilot, which began in January, is due to run until August 2006.
