Professor Stephen Heppell stood down last week as director of Ultralab, the internationally renowned research unit he set up 20 years ago. “I’m delighted to step down from the day-to-day admin of managing Europe’s largest learning technology research lab,” he said. “This frees me to reach into broadcasting, telephones, games and museums. It is wonderful to have the freedom to help these sectors play their part in transforming learning without worrying about day-to-day admin.” He retains a role at Ultralab and remains an Emeritus Professor at Anglia Polytechnic University (see Last Word p39).
