The controversial Shakespeare test for 14-year-olds may be replaced after 1996. Alternative ways of assessing children’s understanding of Shakespeare will be piloted next year if the Education Secretary, approves a recommendation from advisers. It could mean that from 1997 Year 9 pupils are assessed on Shakespeare through teachers’ own judgments or a form of coursework.
