COMMUNITY Service Volunteers is encouraging schools and youth groups to take part in Whitbread Action Earth, the annual environmental campaign which started in 1990. Hundreds of pound;50 grants are available for local environmental projects starting at Christmas until the end of April.
Grants to help with costs of materials, equipment, or even hot soup for cold, tired helpers, are available if schools or youth groups can show that their project will improve the local environment,involve volunteers and meet a community need.
For projects initiated and led by 16 to 25-year-olds, there are 10 grants of pound;100 available for those who register their projects early.
Last year’s projects included planting a wildlife area in a local school, erecting birdbathedgehog boxes in a nearby wood, cleaning up a beach and clearing and erecting signs on a footpath.
The campaign, involving around 10,000 volunteers in 600 projects, is supported by Whitbread and the Community Fund.
