Nike might have thought that the London borough of Hackney would be flattered when the sports giant launched a “Hackney” sportswear range. But Hackney council reacted angrily to seeing its circular logo on Nike’s bright green balls, boots and clothing, depicting the Hackney marshes football pitches in east London.
Nike has since agreed to pay pound;300,000 compensation for breach of copyright, and the council is using the money for school sports and youth athletics.
