The lack of education for 125 million of the world’s children is more destructive than any earthquake or civil war, says Oxfam’s revised education report. Its author, senior Oxfam adviser Kevin Watkins, says the failure to provide education for all is consigning millions of children to a future of poverty and insecurit. About $8 billion - or just 0.02 per cent of the world’s annual GDP - is needed to give every child a good primary education. Developing countries could achieve this goal by raising spending on primary education by 20 per cent of GDP or if wealthy countries restored just one third of cuts in aid since 1992.
