Mark Haysom, chief executive of the Learning and Skills Council, has been conspicuous by his absence. The reason is that he has been travelling around the country keeping up with a tough schedule of college visits which have been set up by his staff at Coventry HQ.

When you’ve got a new boss, it is a good idea to keep him or her busy so they don’t start coming up with ideas which upset your routine. At least that’s the theory, although that’s not quite how it worked out at the LSC.

“That was tried with Mark,” says a chum at the LSC. “But he came back with Agenda for Change.”
